Camel milk and cancer: The Test and Research

According to several studies, since camel milk contains high levels of lactoferrins, immunoglobulins and iron – binding glycoprotein, it acts outstanding to combat and eradicate the cancer cells (HepG2-MCF7). These components act as antitumor and which happens through increasing RNA synthesis and the inhibition of protein kinases and differentiation. Camel milk also contains lactoperoxidase which possess anti-tumor activity. The peptidoglycon protein found in the camel milk was first used to fight breast cancer through of take over metastasis(Source: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/).

A study was performed on the influence of enzymatic hydrolysis and digestive of casein in camel milk and beta casein on their antioxidants and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory traits. The results showed that when consumed camel milk and hydrolyzed, the generated peptides act as natural antioxidants and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. In an experiment performed on animal, the influence of camel milk consumption on the promotion and proliferation of cancer hepatoma (HepG2) and human breast (MCF7) cancer cells was observed. The study showed that camel milk significantly inhibited the proliferation of the cancer cells via activation of caspase-3 mRNA. Camel milk can protect body from proliferation of cancer cells by 50% at 5 mg/mL and exerts antioxidant DNA damage inhibitory activity (Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22654482/ and https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23768340/)

The first experiment at the effect of camel milk on cancer

In the university of Jordon, the benefits of camel milk against the development of cancer have been studied by researchers. The study, published in the Emirates Journal of Food and Agriculture, is considered to be the first to look at the effect of camel milk on the development of colorectal cancer in a whole organism – specifically in mice.

The results suggest camel milk could be effective as a “complementary approach” to control colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer. However, since the study was based on only mice, there are differences in opinion about the the treatment or prevention of colorectal cancer in people by consuming camel milk.

During this study, 30 mice were given an injection and fed a substance that promoted the development of colorectal cancer. With it, some of them were given camel milk whey (the water-like liquid left behind after curd is removed), while the others were given cow milk whey, and a further group received nothing.

The result was amazing. Six mice out of ten that were not given any whey, developed tumor in their colon and six out of eight mice that were given cow whey, developed colon tumor while only one out of eight mice that were given camel whey, developed the condition. (Source: thenationalnews.com)

Chemical composition of camel milk:

Camel milk contains high content of Iron and calcium. It is also higher in insulin, B-lactose albumin, whey acidic protein, peptidoglycon recognition protein, casein micelles, whey and Omega-7 comparing to caws milk. Milk fat is an important component in the milk which determines the nutritional value of milks. Since camel milk contains lower content of fat in comparison to cow or any other milk, it is much better than cow milk. Also, it has been reported that the fatty acids in camel milk mostly composed of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (C14-C18) than short chains (C4-C14), which is highly useful for the body health. Apart from this, camel milk fat is completely homogenized with the smallest globule’s diameter around 2.99 μm which imparts a smooth texture to the milk.

Camel milk contains reasonable amount of It Iron and calcium and high acid due to vitamin C and decreases pH, it can ease the nutrients absorption in the intestine. It has been reported that camel milk Furthermore, it contains Zinc which play an important role in the maintenance and improvement of immune system. Also, it has been reported that camel milk possesses higher amount of trace minerals comparing to other mammalians.

Mineral profile of camel milk in different stages:

Camel milk is significant for its enzymes content and their activities. Among the enzymes, the highest enzymatic activity is Gamma glutamyl transferase and Lactate dehydrogenase by 132 to 168 and 254-296 IU/L respectively, and the lowest quantity of enzymes found is catalase by 0.0083-0.193 moles/min/g of protein. Some of the enzymes found in camel milk can also act as an indicator to ensure the quality of the milk. But this could be different in milk sources.(Source: clinmedjournals.org)

Camel milk and urine to treat cancer:

Many people admit the crucial role of camel milk and urine to treat cancer. Both camel milk and urine are among natural products endowed in agents with such desirable characteristics. These products possess supreme cytotoxic effect against various cancer cells and cell lines. While camel urine (CU) is widely used in the Arabian Peninsula to treat various diseases, including cancer, its exact mechanism of action is still not defined. Researchers at Arab Biotechnology Company (ABC) have said experiments conducted on mice have proved to be 100 % successful. They found the camel’s immune system was rejuvenating itself every time they took samples of milk and urine, making it one of the strongest immune systems. However, there is no proven study on human being that proves camel urine benefits to treat cancer.

Why use camel milk for cancer?

  • The most important reason to use camel milk for cancer is that it contains antioxidants. Antioxidants combat oxidative stress, a chemical imbalance associated with the presence of reactive molecules that can damage DNA and cause potentially harmful mutations. Possessing strong anti-oxidant and antimicrobial activity by camel milk can also help to reduce the inflammation of liver and healthy functioning of liver. Thus camel milk benefits for liver is quite significant.
  • It is reported that peptidoglycon recognition protein present in camel milk can act as anti-cancer activity against breast cancer through controlling metastasis
  • Camel milk minimises migration of cancer cells. Cell migration is a property of cancer cells that contributes to its potential to invade into other tissues or organs that can result in a condition of metastasis.
  • The antibodies of camel milk are quite active and can bind to tumor cells and destroy them without damaging the healthy cells. Additionally, camel milk also contains thrombolytic activity which inhibits the coagulation and formation of fibrin consequently hinders the metastatic tumor cells to growth and spread.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research–India Diabetes Study, the spread of diabetes to economically disadvantaged sections of society is a matter of great concern.

Diabetes has been a crucial public health issue in India for years, imparting a huge burden on healthcare economics. The impact of camel milk on diabetes has been a matter of discussion for the past few years. Recently several studies found the effectiveness of camel milk for diabetes treatment. In this study, the researchers have analyzed the evidence and found significant camel milk benefits for diabetes patients, especially with type 1 diabetes. However, its effectiveness for improving the glycemic profile of type 2 diabetes is highly controversial till now.

Camel milk is highly nutritious, and milk fat is an essential component because of its high nutritional value. The researchers used camel milk in this study since it has a higher level of polyunsaturated fat in comparison to cow’s milk. However, because of the complexity of camel milk’s makeup, the researchers decided to only evaluate its effect on inflammation. In this content, we will share the benefits of camel milk for diabetes treatment with evidence.

According to Professor Keith Morris and his team, lipids (blood fats) in camel milk can prevent macrophages from developing abdominal fat.

Though camel milk has a great impact on human health, people in India are still not aware of this milk. However, despite the lack of awareness throughout the country, it has been found that Raicas, a certain tribe of Rajasthan camel breeders, have an extremely low incidence of diabetes. In Rajasthan, there are many tribes, for whom camels are a means of life. For most of them, camel milk is a dietary staple, and that is the reason the diabetes epidemic has bypassed their community. In fact, research says Raicas, who consume camel milk daily, have a zero percent incidence of diabetes.

The current series of studies were conducted at the SP Medical College, in Bikaner, India, the home to the famed National Research Center on Camel (NRCC). The initial studies revealed a zero percent prevalence of diabetes in these particular Raica communities. In the further extensive studies conducted on the Raicas, it was revealed that the camel consumers had a zero percent diabetes incidence, while non-camel milk consuming Raicas experienced five to six percent incidence of diabetes. 3. Camel milk and type 1 diabetes:

There are several studies that show a significant effect of camel milk for diabetes type 1 in humans. Three studies were performed by Agrawal et al. (2003-2011), and they made the trials and researches mostly on Indians.

  • Evidence from India
Through short-term randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 3 months, cross-over study (three months), and long-term RCT; Agrawal et al. showed that the type 1 diabetic patients, receiving came milk along with usual care, have significantly improved blood glucose and HbA1c levels, insulin requirement, and quality of life than those who were receiving the usual care, except for the camel milk.

In 2011, El-Sayed et al. conducted a small RCT on 50 type-1 diabetic patients in Egypt and showed that camel milk, along with insulin, can provide a better result as an adjunctive therapy. Another RCT, performed on the Middle East population, also showed the usage of camel milk as an adjunct to standard therapy for the management of type 1 diabetes.

In 2014, Bhat et al. reported a unique finding from “Raikas. They explained that camel milk, being part of the community’s staple diet, they might get some special immunity or protective power to deal with this disease.

4. Camel milk and type 2 diabetes:

While there is evidence that shows the significant effect of camel milk on type 1 diabetes management, the effect of camel milk on diabetes type 2 is quite scarce, with only one Indian trial.

Agrawal et al performed a small RCT (randomized controlled trial) with 28 participants to evaluate the effects of camel milk for diabetes type 2. According to their study on Raika and Non-Raika community, they reported that camel milk reduces fasting blood sugar, postprandial glucose, and HbA1c.

Another study performed in 2009 about the hypoglycemic effect of camel milk on type 2 diabetic patients and clearly concluded that only in combination with antidiabetic medications, the hypoglycemic effect of the camel milk can be claimed. One of the most recent studies, conducted in 2016, also advocated similar findings. The researchers concluded that consumption of camel milk would be a useful therapeutic tool for type 2 diabetic patients when used with insulin. Because of their significant effect in reducing blood sugar, camel milk can be consumed daily.
(Source: jfmpc.com)

All the evidence is clearly stating that in contrast to type 1 diabetes, where the results are quite promising for the use of camel milk, the research evidence supporting its use for type 2 diabetes management is not so clear. More research in the form of RCTs is needed to support the initial findings.

The above evidence is sufficient to understand that when it comes to type 1 diabetes treatment, consuming camel milk can be highly effective. However, the result with type 2 diabetes is also effective, but not as satisfactory as it is with type 1 diabetes. When it comes to type 2 diabetes, the results are not so satisfactory, but the best part is, there is no misleading impact on consuming camel milk for diabetes.

5. Is there any side-effect?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) addresses some issues in raw camel milk related to Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues). However, there is no evidence of it. Moreover, pasteurized camel milk is pure and absolutely safe for your body. So, you can buy pasteurized camel milk in India and consume it irrespective of whether you have diabetes or not.

According to the researchers, camel milk contains 52 units of insulin per liter, which is more than 60% of the average necessary external insulin administration for type 1 diabetics. So, it can be easily speculated that it is a great supplement as insulin shots for type 1 diabetic patients. And it can even prevent diabetes. In addition to the anti-diabetic properties, camel milk is lower in cholesterol, and higher in natural minerals in comparison to cow milk. It can also help in preventing tuberculosis. You can buy pasteurized frozen camel milk online in India and thaw it before using it.

Camel Milk
Camel milk has been a center of discussion in the health community for the last few years. It has already been into medicinal practices for several health issues. A quick surf of the internet would help you find out the stories of the camel milk and its medicinal effects on chronic illness. A lot of other studies have thrown light on camel milk and autism recovery and research.

What is Autism and How Camel Milk can Help in Treating Autism?

Autism spectrum disorders are an umbrella term for different neurodevelopmental conditions that can break social interactions and cause repetitive behaviors. This severe neurodevelopment disorder might start at the age of 3. Autism is basically the abnormality in social orientation, communication, and repetitive behaviors. In addition to behavioral impairment, ASD or autism spectrum disorder is associated with a high prevalence of the autoimmune disease, gastrointestinal disease and dysbiosis, and mental retardation. The predominance of autism has increased over the last few decades.

Is Camel Milk Good for Autism?

There have been extensive studies demonstrating that the oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathology of several neurological diseases, including autism spectrum disorder or ASD. These studies show that GSH (Glutathione is an antioxidant in plants, animals, fungi, and some bacteria and archaea) and other antioxidant enzymes play a pathophysiological role in autism. When it comes to analyzing the role of camel milk, its potential therapeutic effects in autism is notable. The current studies on camel milk for autism will evaluate the effect of camel milk consumption in autistic children. The findings show that camel milk could play a fundamental role in minimizing oxidative stress. It also shows a visible improvement of autistic behavior as demonstrated by the improved Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS).

Camel milk has emerged to have potential therapeutic effects in many diseases such as food allergy, hepatitis B, diabetes mellitus, autism and other autoimmune diseases. Its unique composition is quite different from other ruminants’ milk. Camel milk contains lower fat, cholesterol, and lactose than other types of milk, like cow milk, higher minerals, and it contains no beta-lactoglobulin and beta-casein. These two are the main cause of allergy in cow’s milk. Apart from that, the camel milk contains different protective proteins, mainly enzymes. These enzymes exert antibacterial, antiviral, and immunological properties, including immune globulins, peptidoglycan recognition protein (PGRP) lysozymes and lactoferrin. These immunological properties are crucial in preventing food allergy and rehabilitating the immune system.

Has Camel’s Milk Helped Anyone with Autism?

A mother shared her story about her son who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. She started giving him half-cup of camel milk and noticed an improvement overnight in his symptoms. She continued camel milk for 6 consecutive years and experienced significant improvement in her son’s ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). She shared the effectiveness and safety of camel’s milk for her autistic son. (Information source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc)

Behavioral Benefits of Camel Milk in Subject with ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder

The main reason for this study was to investigate the possible therapeutic effects of camel milk on behavioral characteristics as an interventional strategy in autistic children.

  • The Place and Duration of Camel Milk study on Autism:
Autism Research and Treatment Center, Al-Amodi Autism Research Chair, Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from October 2012 to May 2013.
  • Methodology:
65 children with autism were chosen (60 boys and 5 girls) in this assessment. Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Autism treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC), and Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) evaluated the behavioral symptoms before and after the 2 weeks of camel milk therapy.
  • Results:
CARS, SRS, and ATEC scales detected significant differences in ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This study shows that camel milk can be a promising therapeutic intervention in ASD. (Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26577969/)

Let’s Learn the Term:

  • CARS:
The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was designed as a measure of symptom severity.
  • SRS:
The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) refers to a 65-item rating scale that measures the severity of autistic symptoms as a quantitative trait, among children, who were clinically affected by autism.
  • ATEC:
The Autism Treatment Evaluation Scale refers to a 77-item diagnostic assessment tool. It was developed by Bernard Rimland and Stephen Edelson at the Autism Research Institute. Originally designed to evaluate the effectiveness of autism treatments, ATEC has been a popular tool for the researchers. However, it may also be beneficial as a screening tool for children.

Indian and Middle Eastern doctors got an opportunity to spend quality time to find out different properties, and the results and findings were exciting. People, who believed in the marvelous benefits of camel milk were happy and proud. A Saudi Arabian study proved how camel milk positively affects oxidative stress in children with Autism. It shows how regular consumption of camel milk would attribute to calm behaviors. In this study, sixty autistic patients between the ages of two and twelve were gathered and given 500ml of camel milk, daily, for two weeks. The consistent consumption of camel milk showed a significant fall in oxidative stress numbers. These significant changes helped autistic children to be more relaxed and exhibit better behaviors as they potentially didn’t feel the same stress level. It was just the beginning! This study reveals promising news for the nutritional benefits of camel milk. Camel milk has been proven to be an effective way of treating autism without any negative effect.

What is the Role of Camel Milk for Autism Recovery?

Autism refers to life-long neuro-development malfunctions characterized by a lack of communication and social interaction. Several studies show that camel milk can be used as a treatment for autistic patients. Since it contains a high level of antioxidants in the form of vitamins, including A, C, and E, and other minerals, such as Mg and Zn, it can minimize the oxidative stress rate significantly. Furthermore, these minerals stimulate glutathione manufacturing. Glutathione contains antibodies equal to the size of immune antibodies in humans, which work great to develop autistic behavior. It has been reported that oxidative stress plays a crucial role in some neurological diseases, like autism. Recently camel milk has shown a therapeutic potent impact on autism. In a study to find a potential association between camel milk consumption and reduction of oxidative stress with autistic behavior in children, it was proved that after two-week consumption of camel milk, the level of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and myeloperoxidase in plasma was significantly increased. The study proposes that consuming camel milk can play a vital role to decrease oxidative stress by changing the concentration of anti-oxidative enzymes non-enzymatic anti-oxidants molecules. It can also reduce the signs of autism in children. Also, its lower content of B-casein, lack of B-lactoglobulin, and the presence of protective protein make camel milk suitable for people to maintain the immune system and boost brain development. It has been stated that autism is among the diseases that have been successfully managed with camel milk.
